New Beginnings

I'm going to do this post ahead of some others that I've been slacking on because this one is extra special.  Today marked a big day at our house, our oldest started Kindergarten.  Many people asked me if I was prepared for this moment.  Why were they asking about me, Nolan was the one embarking on a new journey not me.  I genuinely shrugged the question off because as I saw it going to Kindergarten was really no different than his schedule right now.  Right now he goes to "school" 5 days a week all day.  So what's the difference really?  Well, I stomped in that school today feeling all tough and mighty and as I stood at his tiny little desk looking at his little cubbie with his name on it I couldn't help but get a little choked up.  Now don't get all excited, there were no alligator tears and there was no scene, but it hit me deep down inside that my little baby was no longer that.  He was a big Kindergartener now, a big Kindergartener in a big school with big responsibilities.  He has to learn how to navigate this school by himself.  I can't walk him through all the steps and I can't be there to make sure he succeeds.  I realize there are teachers there to do that, but this morning it sure felt like I was leaving him on an island to fend for himself.  But you know what?  He did it, and he did it well.  He was a little timid walking into the classroom but once he crossed over that threshold he was back to his big bad self and already too cool for school (literally).  It would have been SOOOO uncool to hug and kiss his Mom and Dad (but don't you worry, I stole a slight pat on the back before I left).  He rocked his first day and he is pretty pumped to go back tomorrow.  So here's hoping he stays this excited for the next 12 years!!  If only everyday could be as exciting as the first day of Kindergarten!
